Ready For A New Air Conditioner? 3 Tips To Help You Get Started

If you're ready to invest in a new air conditioner for your home, now's the time to plan for the installation. If you bought a window-mounted air conditioner, you can handle the installation on your own. That's not the case with a whole-house air conditioning system. Whole-house air conditioning systems need professional installation. That's especially true if you want to avoid costly mistakes. Before you schedule the installation of your new air conditioner, read the list below. Here are three steps that will ensure a problem-free AC installation.

Start With the System

When it comes to buying a new air conditioner for your home, you have a couple of systems to choose from. Two of those systems include central air conditioning and ductless air conditioning. There are benefits to each type of air conditioning system. If your home doesn't have ductwork for a central air conditioner, a ductless system might be your best option. Ductless systems can be installed without the use of ducts. If your home already has ducts, talk to your contractor about installing a central air conditioner.

Prepare the Location

If you've decided on a central air conditioning system for your home, location is a key part of the installation. The first thing you need to do is choose the right location. Before you install your air conditioner, check the surroundings.  Your AC condenser shouldn't be near heat, natural gas, or electrical lines. You also need to choose a location that has adequate ventilation and airflow.

Once you've selected the right location, you need to clear away the debris and install the concrete pad. The concrete pad keeps your AC condenser off the dirt. This helps prevent water damage and keeps pests away. It's also important that you set up a good drainage system. That way, condensation can drain away from your air conditioner.

Discuss the Process

Now that you're ready to install your new air conditioner, talk to the contractor about the process. There are some things you need to do to prepare for the installation. If you've decided on a roof-mount air conditioner, you'll need to make room in the yard for heavy equipment. The contractor may need to set up a scaffolding system to access the roof. Or, they may need to bring in a crane to lift the condenser. Your HVAC contractor can give you a list of steps to take to prepare for AC installation.
